There’s no better place in Australia to begin a campervan or motorhome adventure than in Melbourne. Melbourne is a giant city filled with wonderful things to do and see. When you’re done enjoying all the city has to offer, your campervan rental adventure is just beginning. Melbourne is situated in the heart of the southern coastline of Australia, and you can find wonderful places to visit in your campervan if you head west, north, or east of the city.

Although Melbourne is one of the world’s great metropolises, it also has many campgrounds located within easy driving distance of the city, and public transportation into the city centre is also available for people caravanning outside the city limits. A campervan hire Melbourne adventure can include a trip down the famous Great Ocean Road, one of the most scenic drives in the entire world. Traveling in southern Australia is easy in a campervan, and new and exciting adventures await you around every corner.

Melbourne is the second-largest city in Australia, home to almost 4.5 million people. It’s not just big in population. Melbourne’s major metropolitan area covers more than 9,900 square kilometers. Located on the south coast of Australia, it has been voted the world’s most livable city many times, and is also tied with Oslo, Norway as the fourth-most expensive city in the entire world.

If you’re starting your campervan hire Melbourne adventure by flying into the city, it pays to stick around and enjoy some of the many cultural amenities the city has to offer. Many people on holiday take advantage of plush hotels downtown for a few days before renting a campervan. Others take advantage of the many motorhome and RV parks just outside the city, and travel in on daytrips while saving money by returning to their campgrounds at night. The Central Business District, Carlton, and South Yarra neighborhoods not only have many comfortable lodgings, they’re surrounded by the finest dining, shopping, and cultural attractions in Australia.

If you head west from Melbourne, you can take the famous Great Ocean Road. If you drive continuously, you can cover its entire length in a day, but there’s no reason to rush, and pausing to look at what the coastline has to offer is always worth your while. The road darts inland hear and there, and you can visit the Otway Ranges and camp overnight. Along the rest of the route you’ll pass through Port Fairy, Lorne, Torquay, and Warrnambool, all worth a stop. When you make it as far as Portland, you can camp at Mount Gambier and see the beautiful Blue Lake region. There are dozens of magnificent swimming and surfing beaches along the route. Your campervan will allow you to stop and stay for as long as you like at any location that strikes your fancy.

Heading east from Melbourne is another great adventure. You’ll head towards Gold Coast and Sydney, and drive along the greatest stretch of beaches in the world, along with other extraordinary scenery. Melbourne is also a great central base for wine country tours all over central and northeast Victoria. There are many places to camp, and a picnic under the blue canopy of the sky after a tour of the local winery is a memory you’ll cherish forever.
