Description

This tiny house on wheels is tucked in at the base of a sloping garden overlooking an historic railway line and is the proto-type tiny house for Fred’s Tiny Houses and Fred’s Tiny House Trailers. A beautiful private setting with a country feel allows visitors to relax and experience an alternative way of living. It’s a pleasant 30 minute walk along Campbell’s Creek to Castlemaine where you’ll find the shops and friendly folk.

The space

What’s special about our tiny house is that it was designed and built by Fred Schultz of Fred’s Tiny Houses as the prototype off-the grid tiny house built for an Australian climate. If you have an interest in tiny houses and a spirit of adventure about living off-the grid, you’ll love this tiny house’s unique features. A modern composting toilet. A methylated spirits stove/oven. Gravity-fed hot water in a Japanese style bathtub. A handmade wood heater with wetback & passive solar hot water designed right in. Enjoy a cuppa tea under the veranda awning and wave to the passengers on the historic steam train as it passes by.

Guest access

You will have full access to the tiny house and garden space.

Interaction with guests

We’re available for all your questions.

Other things to note

Staying in a tiny house on wheels is it’s own adventure and staying in an off-grid version is even more out of the ordinary. So expect to experience using unconventional appliances (fridge, stove, toilet, bath & heater), a ladder to get into the sleeping loft and all the clever transformable space you might expect in a tiny house on wheels.

Regarding children: our tiny house is not safe for children. Airbnb’s standard wording: “may not be suitable for children” is not strong enough and misleading. We have no way of changing that statement. Please do not book if you intend to bring your children. We are unwilling to take the risk that your child will be injured while climbing a ladder or being in close proximity to an unfamiliar wood heater, no matter how well supervised or mature they may be. Thank you for your understanding.

The neighbourhood
Fred’s home is located in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia.
Monaghan Street is an unpaved residential street with a country feel in an odd-socks part of Castlemaine with nearby light industrial & municipal facilities and the renowned art space & gallery, Lot 19, just a short walk away.

A walking track along Campbell’s Creek will take you into Castlemaine shops in about 30 minutes. A very pleasant thing to do.

Once you’ve parked your car by our main house, to get to the tiny house by you’ll walk about 100 meters down a gentle slope through our garden with grapevines to the base of the property which backs up the railway line.

The Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR) is the authentic steam heritage train linking the historic gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon in Central Victoria. Consult their timetable for exact running times. Generally the VGR runs on Sunday and Wednesday. Please note: diesel engines only (no steam trains) December to February due to fire restrictions.
